Literacy BBQ and Book Sale Attracts Record Crowd

Jim Rondeau is calling his Fall 2005 book sale and barbeque a "triple win for literacy."

"We sold books, collected school supplies, and ate a few hot dogs. It was a great day," said the MLA for Assiniboia, after hosting his 5th annual Literacy Book Sale and BBQ on Saturday, September 24 at Sturgeon Creek Collegiate in Winnipeg.

More than 400 book lovers basked in sunshine and warm temperatures while browsing hundreds of titles, from kids' literature to cookbooks, in support of area literacy programs and daycares. Bonnie Korzienowski, the MLA for St. James, co-hosted the event.

Celebrity readers and choral groups from neighbourhood schools performed at the book bazarre.

Many people arrived at the book sale with donations of school supplies to help families in need.

Left-over books deemed suitable for children were donated to local schools and daycares. Mr. Rondeau says the book sale also helps people beyond his own constituency.

"We packed up a bunch of books, and, with help from Literacy Partners of Manitoba, sent them to communities in northern Manitoba."

The 2006 Literacy Book Sale and BBQ is scheduled for Saturday, September 23. Please call 888-7722 or check Jim's website for more information.
