Minister of Healthy Living

Jim was appointed as the first Minister for Healthy Living and Seniors in November 2003. In this role Jim worked with all Ministers and government departments to promote healthy living. The passage of the Non-Smokers Health Protection Act, large expansion of the universal free children's vaccine program, starting Manitoba's "In Motion" program, and expansion of the seniors' programming are some of the milestones achieved in the 10 months he served in this portfolio.

"This was a great opportunity to make a difference and get my feet wet as a new Minister in a brand new ministry".

Some of the activities included:

1. Promote physical activity.
2. Improve nutrition.
3. Decrease injury, especially in the home.
4. Delay or prevent chronic disease.
5. Lowered smoking rate from 21% to 16%.
6. Steer the healthy child initiatives.
7. Support seniors' activities and promote a healthy lifestyle.
